Google has launched a new artificial intelligence (AI) coding agent, stepping up its efforts to capture the developer market. The company announced the global release of “Gemini CLI” (Command Line Interface), an AI-powered coding tool designed to simplify traditional programming interfaces. With this tool, developers can interact with AI using natural language, reducing the need for complex coding syntax. Taylor Mullen, a senior software engineer at Google, stated, “With Gemini CLI, developers can now do much more by solving problems through natural language conversations with their computers.” The tool allows developers to directly access Gemini AI from the command-line interface. Instead of writing intricate code, users can simply type commands like “build me a website,” and the AI will generate the necessary code automatically. While primarily intended as a coding assistant, Google explained that Gemini CLI can also be used for a wide range of tasks, such as creating simple websites or generating videos.

Users can leverage Google’s video generation model “Veo 3” to produce videos or use deep research tools to draft reports. The tool also offers real-time access to Google Search for up-to-date information. Google is releasing Gemini CLI as an open-source project, allowing anyone to modify and redistribute the code freely. Anyone with a Google account can access the Gemini CLI. Ryan J. Salva, Product Director at Google, emphasized, “AI coding agents will transform how not only developers but all creators work over the next decade. Whether you're a student, developer, or freelancer, you should have access to the same powerful tools.” With this release, competition in the AI coding market is expected to intensify among major players such as OpenAI and Anthropic. Last month, OpenAI introduced its own AI coding tool, Codex, while Anthropic — considered a key OpenAI rival — unveiled “Claude Code” back in February.
